NJ YMCA State Alliance Staff Advocates for Water Safety Programs - April 2025 Newsletter
On Monday, March 10th, NJYSA Executive Assistant, Faith Beauzile, had the opportunity to testify in support of YMCA swim programs, sharing her son Jackson's transformative experience.
Jackson, a 10-year-old with autism, had previously struggled to connect with various activities from martial arts to team sports. However, after enrolling him in swimming lessons at the Hamilton Area YMCA, Faith and her family witnessed an incredible change. In just three months, swimming became more than just an activity—it's provided a sensory environment where Jackson feels comfortable and confident.
The pool became Jackson's "second favorite place" after home, and his confidence grew tremendously. This is particularly meaningful as it is the longest activity that he has continuously participated in. Recently, he proudly told Faith, "Mom, now I'll be able to save you if something happens!"
During Faith’s testimony, she emphasized that swimming programs aren't luxury activities, but rather essential services that save lives, build confidence, and create pathways for children of all abilities to thrive. For children like Jackson, YMCA swim programs provide rare opportunities to build independence and joy in a supportive environment.
