NJ YMCA Swimming Lessons

Program Overview

NJ YMCA swim lessons are designed as a progressive, skill-based curriculum focused on:

Water safety and drowning prevention
Skill development and stroke technique
Confidence-building and lifelong fitness

Programs are offered for all ages (infant through adult) in group, private, and adaptive formats.

Level Progression

Beginner (Stages 1-3: Water Acclimation & Basic Skills)

Comfort in water (blowing bubbles, submerging)
Floating (front/back) and basic movement
Intro to safety skills; "Swim, float swim" and "Jump, push, turn, grab"

Goal: Basic water competency and safety awareness.

Intermediate (Stages 4-5: Stroke Introduction & Development)

Front crawl and backstroke fundamentals
Introduction to: breaststroke and butterfly (early stages)
Treading water and deep-water confidence
Increased endurance and coordination

Goal: Reinforce water safety in more complex situations.

Advance (Stage 6+ / Academy Levels)

Refinement of all four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly
Endurance swimming (50-150+ yards)
Flip turns, diving, and racing starts

Goal: Preparation for swim teams and lifeguarding pathways.

Additional Program Formats: Parent/Child (infants-toddlers), preschool swim readiness, teen/adult beginner lessons, private & adaptive lessons, swim conditioning/pre-competitive training
