NJ YMCA Lifeguard Certification Program
Program Overview
NJ YMCA lifeguard certification programs (often via American Red Cross) prepare participants for professional lifeguarding roles at pools, camps, and waterfronts.
Certification Includes
Participants earn nationally recognized certifications in:
- Lifeguarding
- CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
- First Aid
- Emergency Oxygen Administration
Course Components
Prerequisites
- Minimum age: 15 years old
- Pass a swim skills pre-test (endurance + rescue readiness)
Training Curriculum
- Surveillance and hazard prevention
- Water rescue techniques (active/passive victims)
- Spinal injury management
- CPR/AED and first aid response
- Team-based emergency scenarios
Includes: in-person skills training and online/blended learning models (~7 hours typical)
Certification Outcome
- Valid for 2 years
- Qualifies participants for: YMCA pools, camps, and community aquatic facilities.
