In 2008, The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey and the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance partnered in the development of Healthy U - a program aimed at preventing childhood obesity through improved nutrition, increased physical activity, and parental involvement.
Today, the program is implemented in all 21 counties throughout New Jersey, reaching more than 40,000 children ages 3-13 at 480 Y locations and 50 public elementary schools partners.
Healthy U uses the CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) curriculum in the preschool, afterschool and elementary school settings. CATCH is an evidence-based and award winning curriculum that was created in 1992 by national education and child health experts at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Public Health (UTHSC) and the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living.
Healthy U is monitored and measured to determine positive changes in healthy eating and increases in moderate to vigorous physical activity. Data is collectedand evaluated through student self-reporting surveys, activity observations, and FitnessGram.
Results show improvement in key health measurements including increased physical activity and healthier eating. Download the full 2011 Healthy U Evaluation Executive Summary
