Message from the CEO - October 2025 Alliance Newsletter

October 6, 2025

Dear Friends of the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance,

As the crisp air of autumn arrives and the leaves begin to turn, exciting things are happening in YMCAs all across New Jersey. The start of the school year always brings fresh energy, and we are so proud to see children back in their classrooms during the day and thriving in safe, nurturing afterschool programs at their local Ys. These programs do so much more than provide care – they create a place where young people feel a true sense of belonging, build strong friendships, and develop the confidence to grow and thrive.

One of the most inspiring initiatives we are proud to highlight this season is our Youth and Government Program. This unique experience gives high school students the chance to step into the shoes of legislators, judges, lobbyists, and members of the press, learning firsthand how state government works. Over several months of preparation, they gain skills in leadership, civic engagement, and public speaking, culminating in an incredible three-day mock session of state government. Watching teens discover their voices, debate issues that matter to them, and grow as leaders is both powerful and heartwarming. If you know of 9th or 10th graders who may be interested, please connect with Youth Engagement Director, Laura Rodriguez, at lrodriguez@njyalliance.org. Many YMCAs across New Jersey host delegations, and there’s room for more young leaders to join.

As we move through the fall season, it’s also a great time to focus on self-care and wellness. The change of seasons can be a reminder to slow down, recharge, and invest in our own health. Your local Y is here for you, with programs and classes for every age and stage of life. Whether you’re looking to swim, exercise, connect socially, or simply find a community that feels like home, there’s a place for you at the Y.

And remember, seniors are always welcome at the YMCA. Our Ys offer so much for older adults: gentle fitness classes that support mobility and strength, walking clubs and aquatics programs that are easy on the joints, and social activities that create connections and friendships. Many seniors tell us the Y feels like a second family; a place where they can stay active, stay healthy, and stay connected.

Together, we look forward to a season filled with growth, connection, and community spirit. Thank you for being such an important part of our YMCA family.

With gratitude and warm wishes,

Julie Gallanty, Ed.D.
