Celebrating a $500,000 State Investment in Youth Leadership and Water Safety - July 2025 Newsletter

July 2, 2025

We are thrilled to announce that the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance has secured a $500,000 appropriation in the FY2026 state budget to support two life-changing initiatives: the YMCA Youth and Government (YAG) program and Safety Around Water (SAW) programming.

This critical funding will help expand access to civic engagement opportunities for young people and ensure that even more New Jersey youth learn essential water safety skills.

Through YAG, students gain hands-on experience in government and civic leadership, developing skills in public speaking, advocacy, and policymaking, empowering the next generation of diverse leaders to shape our communities. Meanwhile, SAW programming will provide free or low-cost swim lessons and water safety education to children who might not otherwise have access, addressing stark disparities in drowning rates and promoting lifelong health and confidence.

This achievement would not have been possible without the passionate advocacy of our local Ys, student delegates, and dedicated community partners across the state. Your voices, stories, and commitment helped bring this funding to life, ensuring all youth have the opportunity to learn, lead, and thrive.

Thank you to everyone who championed these efforts — together, we’re building a stronger, safer, and more equitable New Jersey.
