NJ YMCA State Alliance Statement of Solidarity with Our Black and African American Community

March 23, 2021

The New Jersey Alliance of YMCAs join the citizens of our state in mourning the tragic death of George Floyd and are heartbroken by the events of racial injustice that have been escalating against Black Americans across our country. New Jersey is the most diverse state in the nation and we, at the Y, celebrate what makes us all different and unique every day. We welcome ALL in our community as we deliver safe, high-quality programs to hundreds of thousands of New Jerseyans and our values and missions demand that we live and act with caring, respect, honesty and responsibility.

Yet we know we live in an environment where far too much social and racial injustice exist. We can do more and we will do more. As our 32 YMCA Associations begin to open back up over the coming weeks, we will strive to be a positive force for change. We will continue to be the Y for all while also allowing spaces for our communities to heal, listen, learn and address the inequities that cannot be allowed to define who we are.
