The Youth and Government Program at Work

September 18, 2019

On June 17, 2019, 13 student representatives from the YMCA Youth & Government program visited Trenton for a Day of Advocacy at the NJ State House. The program not only provided the youth leaders the opportunity to meet with their own district lawmakers, but they had discussions with more than 40 other legislators in the halls of the State House that day.

The day began at Association Business Solutions headquarters with the Alliance’s Legislative Advocate, Libby Vinson, facilitating an advocacy training and public policy discussion with the participants. The students were briefed on the Alliance’s public policy priorities and were coached on how to be advocates for the Y. The youth also witnessed committee hearings where they listened to testimonies on various bills and took a tour of the State House. Day of Advocacy was a prime example of how the YMCA New Jersey Youth & Government program can help participants make a difference in their communities and play a significant role in politics.
