May 3, 2019

New Jersey Congressman Chris Smith was named a YMCA Congressional Champion and presented with an award at the Y’s National Advocacy Days’ Breakfast held in Washington, DC, on March 6, 2019. The YMCA Congressional Champion Award is presented annually to members of Congress for their work in supporting youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Congressman Chris Smith attended the breakfast and was thanked for helping to protect and promote charitable giving incentives for nonprofit organizations through the introduction of the Charitable Giving Tax Deduction Act. A delegation of YMCA leaders and youth advocates from New Jersey were there to personally thank Congressman Smith and his staff for their responsiveness and willingness to support the YMCAs in their district and the statewide efforts of the NJ YMCA State Alliance.

Nearly 300 YMCA leaders from across the nation, including 50 youth advocates, were in Washington to share with Congress the story of how Y’s are impacting communities, as well as to learn about key public policy issues that help advance the Y’s cause.
