Benefits of Exercise for Cancer Survivors
The Y has been called to respond to the growing body of evidence that suggests that physical activity and healthy eating are a critical part of living with cancer. For cancer survivors, studies suggest that exercise improves long-term survival and quality of life. Among the quality of life benefits are improved fitness, enhanced self-esteem and reduced fatigue. Exercise can also help relieve depression and anxiety.
Instructors are trained through the Y and support organizations to give personal, individualized instruction to the participants with an emphasis on these elements:
- Post-rehab exercise
- Nutrition
- Supportive cancer care
- Meditation
The final goal is to help cancer survivors develop their own fitness regimens so they can continue their exercise activities after completing the program.
